They were inhabited by Muslims who continued to live in the area as Mudejars. In the time of Felipe II was sold to a private, Gabriel de Coalla, to defray the expenses of a military expedition.
In 1558 the documents appear like Señorío de Colmenar and from 1611, like patrimony of the First Viscount of Colmenar, Colmenar happens to Christian hands in Century XV. Previously in its term there were Roman and Arab settlements.
In 1560 the demarcation and abjuring of the term proceeded and in 1566 the inscriptions of the items of Baptism, Marriages and Deaths begin.
Colmenar in 1777 gets its independence.
At the beginning of the 19th century, it was already the head of the judicial party of a good part of the Axarquía towns (Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Almachar, El Borge, Periana and Riogordo) and even of the town of Casabermeja, in the Montes de Málaga.
There are no testimonies from Roman times, but given the importance of the findings of the nearby Auta farmhouse (Riogordo), it is not surprising that within the term there was some village or settlement. At least that is how the Roman coins and ceramics found in the Cortijo de los Moriscos and in the hill of the peoneros' house on the local road 345, one kilometer from the town, seem to show. There have also been some testimonies from the Arab period, such as the slate mold for the casting of Muslim medals, found in the farmhouse of Las Guájaras. Also here scattered ceramics and remains have been found in the Cave of the Bracelets near the stream of the Zorreras and, more specifically in the Cortijo de Gonzalo.
Colmenar se asienta en una zona rica de la Axarquía, a 44 kms, de Vélez Malaga y a 30 kms de Málaga en el pleno corazón de «Los Montes», de ahí que también sea conocido como :»Capital de los Montes de Málaga».
Located within the Béticos Systems with an altitude of 694 meters above sea level. A surface of 65'6 km.approximately; and with a current population of 3179 inhabitants.
Currently the urban nucleus awaits us to get lost in its interior and above all to walk and admire its streets and corners. As we scanned its horizons, we soon discovered two historical hills that previously limited the location and extension of the urban area and today we are presented with environmental beauties.
