A little history about Chilches

In 1492, Granada was taken, Chilches and its two towers were divided among the nobles who fought in the battle, including Count Manrique de Lara and Marquis Garcí Fernández Manrique. The inner tower was destroyed a short time later, while the coastal tower remains to this day.

From then until the phylloxera plague of the 19th century that devastated the Malaga economy, Chilches became a fishing village.

Until the 19th century, Chilches depended on the town of Macharaviaya. On June 1, 1821, it was recognized as a constitutional municipality, although it frequently had disputes over tax revenues and land jurisdiction with neighboring Vélez-Málaga, which had been trying to expand for years. During the first half of the 19th century, Vélez-Málaga managed to annex the districts of Arroyo de Santillán, Iberos, and Benajarafe.

On August 31, 1868, Vélez-Málaga finally managed to absorb Chilches,¹​ the last mayor of Chilches being Mr. Gabriel Gálvez de Bustamante.

On October 16, 1995, the majority of its residents, represented by a Commission, initiated the procedure to establish the aforementioned nucleus as an Autonomous Local Entity, rejecting the request made by the residents in a Decree of the Andalusian Regional Government dated April 4, 2006.
